The art of sun clocks
Monclassico is renowned all over the world as the village of artistic sun clocks, where the slow movement of the shadows silently indicates the time.
Here, science and art come together to create an ambitious and unusual project that has its roots in a thousand-year-old tradition: enrich the town's buildings and squares with modern-day sun clocks, transforming Monclassico in an open-air art gallery for everyone to enjoy. In fact, the village has become an important tourist attraction. The "collection" includes more than 50 sun clocks, all different from both a technical and artistic point of view.
Information panels, maps, info points and an interactive multi-media installation, offer visitors the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of timekeeping, astronomy and art. Workshops, games for children, guided tours and Nordic Walking excursion are organised in summer and winter.
Sun clocks
Measuring time has always been important to mankind. Monclassico's sun clocks, or sun dials, mark solar time with great precision, but also serve as compasses and calendars, and make us reflect on their mottoes.
Monclassico features all types of sun clocks, created following complex calculations. They are positioned on walls and on the ground, with Italic, French or Babylonian hours, and there is even a precious sun clock with darkroom. Learn to read sun clocks and discover a fun, unique and fascinating world.
