Sanctuary of Saint Romedio (the most characteristic monastery in Europe)
The Sanctuary of Saint Romedio, in Val di Non, is no doubt the most interesting example of medieval Christian art in Trentino. It was built on top of a limestone rock, more than 70 metres high.
Completely surrounded by nature, the sanctuary is formed by multiple churches and chapels, built one on top of the other. The entire building is connected thanks to a steep staircase with 131 steps.
There are many legends about Saint Romedio, but the most famous one involves a bear. One day, when the hermit Romedio was in his old age, while on his way to Trento on horseback to meet the Bishop, a bear attacked and killed his horse, but Romedio was able to tame the bear and ride it all the way to Trento.
